Nineteen-year-old Reshma Banu sits on the stairs outside her parents' home, staring at the tiny screen on her cell phone.

The video on the screen has her mesmerized: a very short home video of her baby girl, Afreen.

The moments captured are precious because they show Banu's only child alive and well.

Afreen died in the hospital. She was three months old.

Authorities say the baby was admitted to the hospital with bite marks, cigarette burns and a dislocated neck. Police say she was killed by her father.

"After my delivery my husband had come to see me and the baby. He said, 'It is a girl, why did you give birth to a girl?'"

Amidst the mess that the search for India’s Prez resembles, there is a silver lining – Abdul Kalam is back in the reckoning.


If the celestial stars and the numbers are in the right place, the most deserving of the various candidates now in the fray for occupying Raisina Hill is back in the reckoning - former President A P J Abdul Kalam.


Arguably, no President of Independent India has fired the imagination of the citizens as this former President. The former rocket scientist had, with his child-like enthusiasm, energy and most of all, his sync with grammar and language of New India , become an icon of his times - the people's president.

He rescued the presidency from the prisoner that an incumbent of Rashtrapati Bhawan had become - of protocol, propriety and ceremony. It was as if, the highest office of the land had to
necessarily stand above and beyond the citizens to retain its place under the Indian sun. Seen and heard only on ceremonial occasions keeping to a prepared script and protocol.

President Kalam broke that mould and reached out to the citizens, especially the young;

with a sincerity, panache and aplomb which far from eroding the eminence or authority of the highest office burnished it as no president before or since. He proved to be an extraordinary president, India's best.

Italy secured an impressive draw against Spain in their Group C opening match at the Euro Cup 2012 at Gdansk.

Tonight they will take the field against Croatia.

I get a feeling that this will be a more exciting match that their first one.

Independent Croatia has not lost a game against Italy. That means,

in the last 21 years, Italy was never able to beat them! That is some record!

Italy must show the attitude to win this one for keeping alive their prospects for a knock-out berth. They have the last match in the group stage against Ireland,

but if they leave things that far then they would have to depend on fortunes and maths to get a place in the next round.

I don't think coach Cesare Prandelli and company would like to leave it to the last.

Croatia has a very strong team which is good in the midfield and attack too. While Italy must score goals to win this one, they must also ensure that their defence does not leak. So, over the 3-5-2 formation that was adopted against Spain, I prefer to see a 4-4-2 formation to start with. For me, that would sacrifice Christian Maggio from the right wing position and fit Federico Balzaretti to the left back position. It would strengthen the defence with four in the back, with Daniele De Rossi and Giorgio Chiellini as centre backs and Leonardo Bonucci on the right back position and Balzaretti on the left back. At the goal would be Gigi Buffon as usual. In the midfield, I would go with Thiago Motta on the right, Andrea Pirlo and Claudio Marchisio in the middle, and Sebastian Giovinco on the left. Though Mario Balotelli was totally off-colour in the opening match, I would give him another chance to wipe off the bad memories from that match. Balotelli is an impressive footballer and I don't expect him to make those mistakes again. I considered a place in the starting line-up for Antonio Di Natale, but he might not have the full energy to run the entire 90 minutes of it. Moreover, he is a sure shot goal scorer when the team badly needs them. If any of the strikers go bad, may be Prandelli can field Di Natale for the entire second half. Along with Balotelli, would be Antonio Cassano in the strike.

'True Blood' is back! : season 5

Like the smell of barbecue or the sight of a bare midriff, True Blood has become one of those signs that summer has finally arrived.

I love how this show doesn't waste any time, and the premiere was no different, jumping into the action exactly where we left off. Before the opening credits even roll,

Sookie persuades Pam to "turn" a dying Tara. Maybe this plot twist was obvious to some, but I must admit, it came as a complete surprise to me.

Meanwhile, Eric and Bill are captured for killing Nan. Who exactly these people are is somewhat confusing -- especially after Eric makes out with Nora, the woman he reveals is his "sister."

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — Bryce Salvador scored on a deflection off a defenseman and the New Jersey Devils derailed Los Angeles' Stanley Cup coronation for a second time, beating the Kings 2-1 in Game 5 of the finals Saturday night.

Zach Parise ended a five-game goal drought on a rare mistake by goalie Jonathan Quick, and Martin Brodeur stopped 25 shots to help the Devils end the Kings' 10-game postseason winning streak on the road and 12-game run over the past two years, both NHL records.

"That's how a goalie wins the game for you," Parise said about Brodeur.

Justin Williams scored for the Kings, whose once seemingly insurmountable 3-0 series lead has been cut to 3-2.

Game 6 is Monday night in Los Angeles.

More importantly, the Devils have the Kings wondering what's going on for the first time in the postseason.

This marks the first time they have lost consecutive games this postseason,

and the Devils are halfway up a mountain that only one other NHL team has climbed in the finals after losing the first three games.

Only the 1942 Toronto Maple Leafs came back in a best-of-seven finals and won.

Three years later, the Detroit Red Wings rallied from a 3-0 deficit to tie the series, but they lost Game 7 to Toronto.

He’s Filipino professional boxer Manny Pacquiao, WBO Welterweight Champion and long rated as the best pound for pound boxer in the world (hat tip: Norman).

As a Filipino American, I watch Manny Pacquiao's fights as if my favorite NFL team was in the Super Bowl.

His fights are more than just boxing matches to me. They are expressions of talent and wonder by a man who represents my culture.

With each win, Pacquiao lifts boxing and the pride of Filipinos all over the world.

But early this morning (June 10, 2012), a controversial split decision ended Pacquiao's incredible seven-year run.

Timothy Bradley won the bout despite landing fewer punches than Pacquiao did.

Pacquiao connected on 253 punches (34%), while Bradley landed just 159 (19%).

Bradley was the aggressor, throwing more punches than Pacquiao (830 to 751).

Even though Pacquiao landed more punches in 10 out of the 12 rounds, two out of the three judges scored the bout in favor of Bradley.

Many boxing analysts feel that this outcome was a great injustice to Pacquiao.

He deserved to win the fight. Yet two judges saw the fight differently than the rest of us.

Some claim that Bradley won because of his aggression. Bradley threw more punches. But why should that matter if most of them missed?

In baseball, a swing and a miss counts for nothing. In basketball, you don't get points if the ball doesn't go through the net.

Despite heavy anticipation that horse racing would have its first Triple Crown winner since Affirmed in 1978,

I'll Have Another is not running the Belmont Stakes on Saturday.

During an interview on the "Dan Patrick Show" on Friday, trainer Doug O'Neill broke the news.

The three-year-old colt owned by Reddam Racing and trained by O'Neill notched thrilling wins at the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes and was the early favorite at the Belmont Stakes.

The surprise scratch is the result of an injury, with O'Neill telling the Dan Patrick Show that the horse "has the start of some tendonitis in the left front leg.”

O'Neill went on to reveal that he doesn't expect the horse to race again.

"The horse is sound and happy, but it's not worth it," O'Neill would later tell The Associated Press.

The New York Racing Association quickly scheduled a press conference for 1 p.m. on Friday. During the press conference held at Belmont Park, it was announced that I'll Have Another is retired from racing.
