Mexicans are awaiting results of a presidential election dominated by the economy and war on drugs.

Thousands of police were deployed to protect the tens of millions who voted from intimidation by drug cartels at polling booths.

Officials said the voting was largely peaceful.

Enrique Pena Nieto, the frontrunner, is hoping to return to power the PRI party that ruled the country for decades.

His main rival is left-winger Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador.
