time magazine cover

The cover of the latest Time magazine illustrates a story about 72-year-old pediatrician Dr. William Sears with a photo of a nearly 4-year-old boy standing and suckling at the breast of his 26-year-old mother. Headline: "Are you mom enough?"
I had a really difficult time writing a title for this post because I don’t really want to talk about attachment parenting or older child breastfeeding. I think it’s a big world, and people should find what works for them. And having not been able to breastfeed, I don’t know enough about nutrition and older child breastfeeding to form any judgment. (And that is a hint that I also don’t want to hear since I will never have a use for this information.)
I don’t use the twins’ image because I don’t know how they’ll feel about their image being used, and they’re not at an age where I can ask and receive a thoughtful answer. They may be totally fine with it, or they may be upset to read what someone writes about their image. And without knowing, I don’t feel comfortable proceeding. It’s the same ideology I bring to writing about them: I don’t write about anything I wouldn’t say in front of their friends in this moment. Therefore, you will never hear about medical issues or milestones not met or anything they may not want the world to know. You will hear about how they process the idea of evolution or the ChickieNob’s love of the Beastie Boys because that is what they are talking about with their friends right now. Low stakes stuff; that’s what you’re going to find in regards to parenting since I don’t always feel like it’s my story to tell.
A few years ago, I was featured in a New York Times article. I never wrote about it here because… well… there was a reason why I only used my first name for the article. After we had done the interview and such, the author of the article told me that they were sending a photographer to my house to take a picture of myself with the twins. Uh… no. I emailed with the photographer explaining that while I was fine being photographed in a public spot because I knew the repercussions of putting myself out there, I couldn’t make that decision for the twins, not knowing how they’d feel in the future about having been featured. I don’t think the photographer could fathom my stance on this because she kept emailing me about needing the twins in the photo, and I finally had to say that I was very comfortable not being part of the article at all, but not comfortable putting the twins in there. The story ultimately was run with the image of a different person interviewed for the same article.

Renowned Hairstylist

Legendary hairstylist Vidal Sassoon died in his Bel Air home on Wednesday morning. He was 84.

The famed coiffeur passed away from apparent natural causes at the house on Mulholland Drive, where family members were present, according to a Los Angeles Police Department spokesman.
Born in England, Sassoon grew up in London’s Cockney East End. Placed in an orphanage as an infant, he dropped out of school at 14 to work as a shampoo boy in a small salon. After volunteering to fight for Israel in the Negev Desert in 1948, he returned to London to open his first salon. “If I had to be in hair, I was going to do it my way,” he told PEOPLE (read the magazine’s 1976 profile of the just-budding mogul here).
The stylist eventually developed a trademark geometric cut, and beginning in the 1960s, clipped the hair of such stars as Mia Farrow and British fashion icon Mary Quant.
Over time Sassoon earned many more celebrity clients, moved to Los Angeles and launched a successful product line and an international chain of salons. But in 2011, the Daily Mail reported the magnate was suffering from leukemia, a battle he kept private.
Married four times, Sassoon had four children with his second wife, Beverly, and is survived by fourth wife Rhonda. –Kate Hogan

Anna University deal with student stress

Very soon, students in various engineering colleges under Anna University will have a mentor and a guide to discuss their problems. And this will not be just an informal exercise, but an organised activity with the help of trained communication experts, psychologists and counsellors.

The university will organise these sessions starting in June under a mentoring programme, ‘Mind without fear,' to train faculty members in engineering colleges to counsel students and be effective mentors to them.
Teacher training
“We will first have training sessions for teachers where they will share their experiences of handling students, and then professional student counsellors will train them on various approaches to talk to students,” said P. Mannar Jawahar, vice chancellor, Anna University.
Faculty comes forward
The university has already received mails from 120 lecturers and professors from various affiliated colleges of the university who have expressed an interest in the programme.
The letter states, “For the past few years, we have witnessed an enormous increase in the rate of depression among students. Today, the students have developed an apprehension mainly because of the growing competition, and pressure from all walks of life. The unmanageable conflict found among the adolescents sometimes even leads to loss of life too. We firmly believe that this depression can be drastically reduced, if not eliminated fully, through counselling with focus on nurturing of healthy love and affection among the students community.”
One-to-one approach
“Unless there is a one-to one approach, students are not really comfortable speaking about their problems. We want students to develop a pro-active attitude even if their academic performance is not up to the mark,” Mr. Jawahar said. Senior professors and members of the academia who have retired will also be roped in to be part of this programme, Mr. Jawahar added.

Justin Beiber has a new girlfriend

Some of the most interesting things on reality shows happen when the cameras aren't running.
Here's the best of what you didn't see on "The Voice" on Tuesday (April 17).
OMG Part 1 - When The Wanted took the stage, it was pandemonium. Max, Siva, Jay, Tom and Nathan set the place on fire when they played "Chasing The Sun." OK, maybe it wasn't on fire, but it was awfully hot as they had to turn off the A/C in order for all the pyrotechnics and other special effects to work.
OMG Part 2 - If The Wanted wasn't enough to make a teenage girl's heart flutter, it got even better when Justin Bieber came to promote his new album and play a clip from the video for "Boyfriend." When he left the stage The Coiffed One even gave a female fan a kiss on the cheek. When asked later what she thought of the moment, she says "I'm making Selena [Gomez] jealous."
OMG Part 3 - After Bieber announced that his new album is coming out June 19 and that he's also coming back to perform at "The Voice" finale, he quickly left. Was there something wrong? Hardly. He had to scurry off to meet up with his girlfriend Selena Gomez at the Lakers game. It is here that the two ended up on the famed "Kiss Cam" and obliged. Looks like Gomez got her man after all.
OMG Part 4 - After running the uncensored version Cee Lo's famed song "F*** You" during audience warm up last week, producers must have decided to make things more family friendly. So they swapped it out with the decidedly G-rated "Forget You."

Metta World Peace in 2012,April

LOS ANGELES – Metta World Peace was subdued and contrite in the Los Angeles Lakers' locker room, apologizing to Oklahoma City Thunder guard James Harden for throwing the elbow that sent them both to the locker room in the second quarter of the Lakers' 114-106 double-overtime victory.
World Peace had just dunked over Kevin Durant and Serge Ibaka on a fast break and was headed back upcourt when he ran into Harden. While pounding his chest with his right arm, World Peace raised his left elbow over Harden's shoulder and cleanly hit Harden in the back of the skull.
Harden dropped to the court and stayed down for about a minute before heading to the locker room. Ibaka and other Thunder players challenged World Peace but were kept apart, and World Peace was ejected on a flagrant foul-2 after the referees reviewed the tape.
MORE: Lakers rally to top Thunder in double OT PHOTOS: Top shots from the week in NBA action PHOTOS: Cheerleaders from the NBA hardwood The NBA will review the play, and if Harden is out for any length of time, that could affect the length of what in all likelihood will be a suspension for World Peace.
"I got real emotional and excited, and it was unfortunate that James had to get hit with the unintentional elbow,"
said World Peace, who had scored 12 points and played solid defense on Durant. "I hope he's OK. Oklahoma, they're playing for a championship this year. I apologize to the Thunder and James Harden. It was just unfortunate."
Bryant and other Lakers acknowledged World Peace is likely to face a multi-game suspension with one game left in their regular season.

Deccan Chargers Move on Charge

Deccan Chargers
Deccan Chargers

In a format where fortune shifts loyalty in a matter of moments, Deccan Chargers would want to turn the tables, and put their IPL-5 campaign on track when they face Kolkata Knight Riders at the Barabati Stadium here on Sunday. Chargers, who are looking for their first win in the tournament, boast of a 100 per cent win record at this venue (having won both their matches here in IPL-3) and will not want to alter it. While their batting have delivered the goods, the bowling (barring Dale Steyn) and ground fielding have been nothing short of ordinary.
Skipper Kumar Sangakkara and Shikhar Dhawan have been in fine form, while Parthiv Patel, J.P. Duminy and Daniel Christian have the ability to clear the boundary ropes. Steyn will continue to charge in, and look for support from the other end in order to trouble the opposition.
The Knights, on the other hand, have three wins from six games in the competition. The Gautam Gambhir-led unit boasts of a lethal bowling line-up comprising Brett Lee, Jacques Kallis, L. Balaji, Sunil Narine and Rajat Bhatia. All eyes will be on Narine as the Caribbean import has foxed the batsmen with his variations, scalping eight wickets from four outings.
Gauti has been fluent with the willow, and is the leading run-getter for the side (179 from six games). Brendon McCullum and Manvinder Bisla lend sturdiness at the top, while the ever-dependant Kallis and Manoj Tiwary add aggression to the middle-order.
The biggest worry for the Knights will be the form of Yusuf Pathan. With just 27 runs from five innings, Yusuf will be eyeing a longer stint in the middle.
The wounded Bulls will have to script a turnaround on Sunday if they nurse hopes of qualifying for the subsequent stages of the tournament.
Key player : Kolkata Knight riders Gautam Gambhir Gauti has led from the front, scoring runs and marshalling his troops smartly. Being the sixth highest run-getter (179 runs from six games), the left-hander will be expected to fire at the top, and give his team a good start against Dale Steyn & Co. When fielding, Gauti will want to make all the right moves.
Key player : Deccan Chargers Dale Steyn The premier fast bowler has been Deccan Chargers’ go-to man in this competition. With seven wickets from four games at an impressive average of 14.28 in IPL-5, the South African pacer will be expected to put the opposition under pressure right from the word go. Michael McDonald Knocks Out Miguel

Michael McDonald was bouncing on his toes, grinning, soaking in the moment. Surrounded by reporters and cameras, he breezed through a workout as if nothing he could be doing would be more fun.
Soaked in sweat, facing the biggest fight of his life Saturday when he takes on former World Extreme Cagefighting bantamweight champion Miguel Torres in the pay-per-view opener at UFC 145, McDonald glanced at the reporters crowded around him and beamed.
Torres is a dangerous opponent and, by far, the biggest name he's faced to date, but McDonald shrugged. His countenance remains the same. At 21, nothing bothers him much. McDonald is the second-youngest fighter in the UFC and is on an express run toward a title shot. He's 14-1 overall,
3-0 in the UFC and looking like a burgeoning star. The UFC, though, isn't making accommodations to his age. In Torres, McDonald will face an elite opponent who turned professional when McDonald was just 9. Torres is 39-4 overall and has more than twice as many finishes (32) as McDonald has fights (15).

The student taught the mentor a thing or two about fighting in the main event of UFC 145 on Saturday. Jon Jones kept his light heavyweight title with a one-sided victory over Rashad Evans, his former training partner and close friend, before a loud sellout crowd at Philips Arena.
Jones' 84 1/2-inch reach was the biggest difference in the grudge match that was 14 months in the making. The two split after Jones said he'd consider fighting Evans, the man who brought him into the highly regarded Jackson's MMA camp in Albuquerque, N.M., and helped develop him into one of the most dominant forces in the sport.
Jones landed a series of kicks, punches and elbows that kept Evans on the outside and didn't allow him to generate any sustained offense. The champion had a 112-56 edge in strikes, including a 52-12 advantage in power shots, according to CompuStrike.

"It felt completely different fighting him," Jones said in the cage after the bout, which he won by scores of 50-45, 49-46 and 49-46. "I threw a lot of elbows, which is something you don't do to a training partner. My wrestling, I'm a better, stronger wrestler."
This fight, though, was fought primarily on the feet, with Jones controlling the bout with his 10-inch reach advantage. He stunned Evans several times with elbows whenever they got close, which created another issue for Evans.
Unable to compete on the outside and getting elbowed on the inside, Evans had nothing left to try. His wrestling was ineffective against Jones. "He had those sneaky elbows that kept getting in there," Evans said. "I played the wrong game tonight. He came out with those tricky elbows." Jones will likely face veteran Dan Henderson for the title in his next defense, but no fight will be more emotional than the one Saturday against Evans.

Philip Humber HOLD Perfect Game Against Mariners?

White Sox pitcher Philip Humber delivers to the Mariners' Jesus Montero in the eighth inning of what would turn out to be the 21st perfect game in MLB history, a 4-0 blanking of the M's on Saturday in Seattle.
Of all the likely candidates to throw a perfect game in the majors this season, Philip Humber of the Chicago White Sox would have been a long way down the list.
Last year, the Mariners scored 556 runs. I know that last year offense was down league-wide, but it wasn't down to a sufficient degree to explain 556 runs. In my head, 600 runs is the lower threshold. Not even the lower threshold of acceptability - the lower threshold of reality. In my head, it's difficult to conceive of a team that doesn't score 600 runs over an entire baseball season. In 2011, the Mariners scored 556 runs.
(But is he any more unlikely than say, Danny Duffy, Kyle Drabek or Brian Matusz? More on them later.)
Fate has a way of smiling on the unexpected and Humber is now the 21st member of MLB's exclusive fraternity of perfect game pitchers.
Meanwhile, video gamers are also competing to get into a Perfect Club of their own. (Certainly, you've seen the commercials with Kate Upton.) For the third straight season, the makers of the MLB 2K12 game will award a $1 million prize to someone who throws a perfect game this month.

Bucks County Man Stabs Pregnant Girlfriend: Cops

Glenn Witherspoon
Glenn Witherspoon
Police say a Bucks County man asked his girlfriend to watch the sunrise and then brutally attacked her with a knife.
A Bristol Township man is accused of stabbing his pregnant girlfriend several times with a large knife early Thursday.
According to an Affidavit of Probable Cause obtained by NBC10, Glenn Witherspoon, 24, told Jessica Field "I'm sorry I have to do this," before attacking her as they sat in a car.
Field, 22, told police Witherspoon called her several times early Thursday morning and asked her to come to his home on Airacobra Street.
Investigators say When Field arrived, Witherspoon got into her car and wanted to go to the Lennox Parking Lot to watch the sunrise. When they arrived at the lot, Witherspoon pulled a knife and stabbed Field in the chest, just above her heart.
Field and Witherspoon struggled and Field was stabbed several more times according to officers who say Field suffered a three inch laceration on the side of her neck.
Field was able to lock the car doors when Witherspoon got out to get something from the trunk, as Field drove away, Witherspoon jumped on the hood of the car to try to stop her, said police.
She made it to her home on Jackson Street and relatives called 911. At about the same time police received a call about a man walking along Monroe Street who appeared to be bleeding from the head. When officers arrived on Jackson Street, investigators say they approached the man, later identified as Witherspoon, and he told them, "I didn't want to do it, is she alright?" Witherspoon is facing charges of attempted murder, aggravated assault, recklessly endangering another person and possession of a weapon.
He was arraigned Thursday before Bristol District Judge Frank Peranteau and sent to Bucks County Prison in lieu of $1 million cash bail.

How Twitter Covered Bhoja Air Crash

People of Pakistan came out strongly against the vulture like behaviour of main stream media, their reporters sniffing the debris of Bhoja Air plane like hounds out for hunt, throwing stupidly harsh questions at the grieving .
Apparently, the media followed no code of conduct, broadcasted intensely physical graphics without warning the audience and left no stone unturned to put more salt on the wounds of bereaved families.
Here is how Twitter covered the crash of Bhoja Air:

A passenger plane carrying 127 people has crashed into a residential area on its approach to Islamabad International Airport in Pakistan.
The Bhoja Air Boeing 737, flight BHO-213, was descending for landing when the incident happened as it flew from Karachi.
Pakistan's Defence Minister said that the plane burst into flames a few miles from the airport near Chaklala, Rawalpindi, at around 18:40 local time.
There were 118 passengers and nine crew on-board.
Pakistani Police have said there is 'no chance' of any survivors. Karachi and Islamabad airports have been besieged with distraught relatives of those on board.
