National Spelling Bee finals Startin position

in the National Spelling Bee breezed through most of two semifinal rounds with his usual confidence. But with one word separating him from his first time in the finals, he was flustered.
Nicholas Rushlow went through the usual checklist, asking the definition — an evil spirit, believed to be an avenger. Next he asked for the country of origin, which was British Guyana. Pronouncer Jacques Bailly used it in two sentences.

Chagas disease, a tropical insect-borne disease that mostly affects low-income people in the Caribbean and Latin America, is being called “the new HIV/AIDS of the Americas,” PLoS reports.
Researchers are asking that the global community prioritize Chagas disease and develop a comprehensive global plan to fight it. The plan would include blood screening, testing, maternal and child interventions, health education, and research and development.

Cash-strapped Kingfisher Airlines is selling its corporate office building in Mumbai.

Bankers belonging to the lending consortium told Business Line that the airline has approached the bank to give a go-ahead for the sale of Kingfisher House, located on the Western Express Highway. “The file is with the heads of banks now, and any decision on the approval is yet to be conveyed to the company,” said a bank official.

At least four people were killed and 29 others injured in a fire and multiple blasts of cooking gas cylinders in a bakery in a suburb here, an official said.
Eight fire tenders have been rushed to the spot to douse the blaze.
Those injured have been rushed to Sion Hospital while the process in on to identify those killed in the accident.

By now you’ve all heard the horrific story of the naked Miami man who mauled another naked man’s face with his bare teeth.
According to Miami law enforcement officials, the cannibal might have been under the influence of common household “bath salts” when he ate the flesh of an unidentified homeless man on the MacArthur Causeway in Miami on Saturday.
Rudy Eugene, 31, (pictured above) was shot and killed after a Miami police officer was flagged down by a bicyclist who happened upon the gory scene. Eugene continued to eat the man’s face even after being shot once in the chest. He reportedly growled like an animal as he swallowed pieces of flesh.

Boxer Paul Williams paralyzed fall in Georgia crash

Boxer Paul Williams was paralyzed Sunday after being involved in a motorcycle crash in the Atlanta suburbs and doctors said it is unlikely he will continue his career, his manager said Monday.
"From the waist down, he has absolutely no movement. He's in very good spirits, though," George Peterson told The Associated Press from his home in Aiken, S.C. "He still believes he's going to fight again."
Williams, 30, severed his spinal cord after falling on his back and head when he was thrown from his motorcycle Sunday morning in Marietta, Ga., Peterson said. Williams has been listed in serious but stable condition on Monday at an undisclosed hospital, Peterson said.
The crash happened Sunday morning in Marietta after Williams tried to avoid another car in the next lane that was negotiating a curve and then had to maneuver to avoid an oncoming car. Williams was in the area to attend his brother's wedding Sunday afternoon, Peterson said.

MSNBC's Chris Hayes sparked controversy and debate on Sunday when he said that he felt "uncomfortable" calling soldiers killed in action "heroes" because the term can be used to justify potentially unjust wars. He later apologized for the statement.
After speaking with a former Marine whose job it was to notify families of the death of soldiers, he turned to his panel and, clearly wrestling with what to say, raised the issue of language:
I think it's interesting because I think it is very difficult to talk about the war dead and the fallen without invoking valor, without invoking the words "heroes." Why do I feel so [uncomfortable] about the word "hero"? I feel comfortable -- uncomfortable -- about the word because it seems to me that it is so rhetorically proximate to justifications for more war. Um, and, I don't want to obviously desecrate or disrespect memory of anyone that's fallen, and obviously there are individual circumstances in which there is genuine, tremendous heroism: hail of gunfire, rescuing fellow soldiers and things like that. But it seems to me that we marshal this word in a way that is problematic. But maybe I'm wrong about that.
